Everyone has seen the pictures of cats and dogs destroying sets of mini blinds as they desperately try to see what's going on outside in their world.

Not all blinds and shades are designed to stand up to our furry friends. Fortunately, we're here to help you find out what will and won't work for your pets.

Faux Wood and Real Wood Blinds

Faux wood and real wood blinds are a great choice for homes with pets. They are much sturdier than vinyl or aluminum mini blinds. The ability to open and close the slats with a wand tilt option, like on our Premium Custom Wood Blinds, means that your pet can look out the window without destroying your slats. Furthermore, most of our real wood and faux wood blinds feature 2" slats, which allows for a wider gap for your pet to stare out. Roller Shades

Roller shades are another great option for window treatments that are pet friendly. Pets can slip behind the shade without damaging anything. And they won't collect much pet hair, making them easy to clean!

Less Than Ideal Window Treatments

Mini Blinds

When it comes to both vinyl or aluminum mini blinds, they are very likely to get bent or destroyed quickly. The smaller profile of mini blinds (usually 1" slats) also means that there is less visibility, causing pets to bend and break slats to see outside.

Bamboo Shades

Ooh, look, a hanging scratching pad with dangling cords. Bamboo shades are a likely target for cat claws to find.

Cellular Shades

While most of our cellular shades are cordless, they are still made from a polyester fabric material. If your cat is a climber, you're likely to find your shades torn to shreds quickly.

Roman Shades

Because of the fabric nature of our roman shades, they would be a quick victim of cats climbing up the shades.

Your pets are always going to be inclined to look outside. If you have less than ideal window treatments, here are a few tips to help you keep everything in one piece.

1) Keep your blind or shade partway up so they can look outside without destroying the blinds

2) If you have dangling cords, try tying them up, or use a cord cleat to secure them to the wall

3) If you're afraid of scratching and clawing on the shades, get a cat tower and catnip spray (also a good idea to protect your furniture!)
